New York CNN —Rue21, a mall staple for teen apparel, is going out of business and closing all 540 of its stores within the coming weeks. The retailer, which has about $200 million in debt and 4,900 employees, has been struggling financially in recent years despite a 2017 bankruptcy that the company hoped would turn Rue21 around. Its stores, which are located in 45 US states, will close within the next 4 to 6 weeks and “going out of business” sales are beginning soon. Express filed for bankruptcy last month and announced it was closing about 100 stores. 99 Cents Only Stores, a discount chain, also said in April it was going out of business.

New York CNN —Online furniture and home furnishings seller Wayfair is set to open its first-ever namesake store next month, the company announced Thursday. It will also feature an onsite restaurant called “The Porch,” the company said, taking a page out of Ikea’s store setup. Furniture stores need to always be advertising, Saunders added, because people generally don’t buy furniture very often. This is particularly important in furniture and finishings where people like to see and try out products before buying,” Saunders said. “If this store is successful then it could be the start of wider physical expansion for Wayfair,” Saunders said.

Some of the 800 new locations will be store conversions from its now-complete acquisition of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets, with a “significant number” of those locations — largely located in the Southeast — ditching their respective names and being remodeled into an Aldi. Approximately 50 stores will be converted later this year, with a majority of those reopening under the Aldi name in 2025. New York CNN —Home Depot, a bellwether of the housing market and US economy, said sales dropped over the winter and it’s a expecting a slow 2024. Sales at stores open for at least one year fell 3.5% last quarter, and Home Depot projects that sales will continue to decline 1% in 2024. “2023 was a year of moderation,” Home Depot CEO Ted Decker said in a news release Tuesday. Demand for home improvement has fallen due to high mortgage rates and a slowdown in new home construction. “One of the main issues [for Home Depot] continues to be a very sluggish housing market,” Neil Saunders, an analyst at GlobalData Retail, said in a note to clients Tuesday.

Walmart quietly reduced its store count in 2023 even though the company was doing really well. In addition to closing underperforming stores, the retailer sold at least 79 small-format locations. Given what Walmart has planned for the next few years, the move away from smaller locations makes sense. "Walmart has always struggled with smaller stores," Saunders said. In addition to new stores, many existing locations are being upgraded to Walmart's "store of the future" concept, including 650 projects this year.

New York CNN —Target is taking aim at budget-conscious customers with a new value brand with prices for everyday basics that start at less than $1. Most of the items cost less than $10, with the cheapest coming in under $1. The entrance of Dealworthy means a shakeup of two other Target budget-focused brands that it produces: Smartly and Up&Up. The former, which largely focused on household essentials like soap and trash bags, will be discontinued and replaced by Dealworthy items. Up&Up, another affordably priced Target brand, is getting a redesign and will be priced slightly higher than Dealworthy.

New York CNN —Americans seemed more willing to spend money on Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but less willing to donate money on Giving Tuesday. Giving Tuesday’s decline in participation is not an isolated incident, but rather, as its organization acknowledges, part of larger trends philanthropic organizations are experiencing. According to a report by Giving USA from this past June, Americans are giving the lowest percentage of their disposable income since 1995. Americans gave just 1.7% of their disposable income in 2022, with charitable giving declining from 2021 by 3.4% to $499.3 billion, which represents an even larger decline of 10.5% when adjusted for inflation. “I think the numbers are very interesting in terms of Black Friday and Cyber Monday but they don’t tell you the whole picture,” said Neil Saunders, managing director of GlobalData Retail.

Target is taking booze-less spirits mainstream

New York CNN —With sales of non-alcoholic beverages recently becoming a nearly half-billion dollar industry, even Target is becoming sober curious. Drinks in the lineup include two celebrity-backed companies: Kin Euphorics, a trendy brand co-founded by model Bella Hadid, and Katy Perry’s De Soi, which makes non-alcoholic apéritifs. Other brands include NOPE and Ghia, both of which produce non-alcoholic canned cocktails, and alcohol-free wine company Surely. “Séchey is a great curator of non-alcoholic brands and will help Target to really elevate its offer,” Neil Saunders, retail analyst and managing director at GlobalData Retail, told CNN. That has created a boom in sales for non-alcohol spirits, wine and beer, which surpassed $500 million this year according to research firm NIQ.

New York CNN —Kim Kardashian’s private equity firm has announced its first investment: A company that makes truffle-infused sauces that sell for about $20 a bottle. SKKY Partners, the company she formed last year with a former executive at Carlyle Group, has acquired a “significant minority stake” in Truff sauces. The six-year-old brand has recently grown in popularity for its condiments that extends from hot sauce to mayonnaise. The sauce brand has recently had high-profile collaborations with Taco Bell for a custom hot sauce and Hidden Valley for a special dressing. Skims, her underwear and apparel brand, recently launched a line for men.

But signs of a turnaround for its Old Navy division offered at least something to cheer about. Overall revenue in the quarter for Gap Inc. fell 7% in the period over last year to $3.8 billion. Store sales across its brands in the quarter dropped 6%, while companywide online sales slumped 8% over the same time last year. Looking at its individual brands, sales at Gap’s namesake stores tumbled 15% versus a year ago. Excluding the negative impact from the sale of Gap China and the shutdown of Yeezy Gap, net sales for Gap were down 6% versus last year.

The New York City-based dessert maker is transforming some of its famous treats into THC-infused edibles, including its banana pudding and red velvet cake. The limited-edition bars, which mark Magnolia’s first-ever cannabis product, “celebrate the brand’s most iconic, fan-favorite flavors in a new light,” the bakery said. That has created consumer interest in weed, including edibles, with the stigma of buying the drug dissipating. Perhaps once known for being just “pot brownies,” the edible market has blossomed into several categories and hundreds of brands, including gummies, mints and candy bars. “There is no real downside to Magnolia, as consumer opinions on cannabis are now relativity liberal,” he told CNN.

Dollar General is trying to cut down on excess inventory to tame its messy stores. "We believe it will drive traffic and also more quickly reduce excess inventory," Owen said on the call. To clean up its stores, Dollar General is also deploying "smart teams," or groups of employees who move between multiple stores to organize excess inventory, Owen said. Aisles at many Dollar General stores have been clogged with everything from dog food to school supplies over the last few years. That's led to multiple problems, such as local fire marshals closing Dollar General stores because merchandise is blocking fire exits.

Macy's said US consumers have less cash to spend, and are choosing experiences over products. Dick's meanwhile reported an unexpected uptick in inventory shrink, presumably from theft. Macy's, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Lowe's each sounded alarm bells on Tuesday about the financial state of US shoppers, with each company reporting softening profit margins in key categories. Lowe's — like rival Home Depot last week — is seeing weaker demand from its DIY shoppers after a burst of home spending during the pandemic. In a press release, Dick's CEO Lauren Hobart called shrink "an increasingly serious issue impacting many retailers."

Walmart posted surprisingly strong sales growth in the last quarter, while Target reported a decline. As shoppers increasingly prioritize essentials, one in four US grocery dollars are spent at Walmart. When Walmart's grocery sales are combined with those of its subsidiary warehouse club Sam's Club, the total approaches a third of total US grocery spending. Target meanwhile accounts for 3% of grocery dollars, or about a tenth of Walmart Inc., per Numerator. Target sells those things too, of course, but if shoppers are already heading to Walmart for groceries, they may not want to make a second stop.

Bargain e-commerce company Temu has had a whirlwind 2023. By February 2023, the 5-month-old company made its TV debut during Super Bowl LVII, airing two commercial spots totaling an estimated $14 million. Temu's popularity is largely due to its ultra-cheap knockoffs. On top of the steep discounts, users are bombarded by coupons, free shipping countdowns, flash sales and discount wheels. Temu's rise in popularity has also courted scrutiny from the U.S. government, accusing the website of exploiting de minimis shipping rules to undercut U.S. retailers.

Coach owner Tapestry is buying Capri Holdings, the parent company of Michael Kors, for $8.5 billion. The new deal gives Tapestry greater influence in the luxury market and could bolster growth internationally. Capri is the parent company of well-known fashion brands Michael Kors, Versace, and Jimmy Choo. And it could give Tapestry greater influence in the luxury market to take on European powerhouses LVMH and Kering, which own a string of luxury brands including Louis Vuitton, Tiffany's, and Gucci.
